So last weekend was the Chesapeake Crit, the State Crit Championship. When I arrived, one of the men's races was ongoing, I checked in, and being an hour or so early, sat down on the curb to wait. The race rushed by with people constantly vying for position. The next race was the juniors 10-14, my friend Colin raced in this one. He placed third after Adam Croft and one other racer.
Next was my race, we had about 20 min. to warm up on the course, and I was ready to take full advantage of that. There were only two girls in my race (including me) and about 6 guys. I warmed up with Mason Hopkins (my competition) and then we pulled up to the start with the guys to wait.
The start was fast with everyone fitting across the line together, the middle took off the fastest. I missed my petal trying to clip-in and that slowed me down. I fell to the back of the pack, but could only hold on for about half a lap. The pace was much quicker than I expected, starting at 23 mph and just getting faster. I was lapped 3 times, but I still maintained 18-20 mph myself.
I finished alone, but since there were only two 15-16 girls, I won the silver medal.
Overall, the race was fun and I placed at my first state championships. Next year, I'm going to win at the state championships.
